Education Options for Muslim Kids

Why consider non traditional schooling methods?

As education is highly valued in Islam, Muslim parents should consider educating their children through alternative means other than schools to ensure that their children receive a quality education that aligns with their religious beliefs and values. Homeschooling, for example, provides a personalized and flexible approach to education, allowing parents to incorporate Islamic teachings and values into their children's curriculum. Islamic schools and online learning platforms also offer the opportunity for Muslim children to learn in an environment that is supportive of their faith and culture. Moreover, by taking an active role in their children's education, Muslim parents can ensure that their children receive a comprehensive education that not only prepares them academically but also spiritually and morally. Ultimately, by exploring alternative forms of education, Muslim parents can ensure that their children receive an education that is tailored to their needs and allows them to grow as well-rounded individuals who are grounded in their faith and values.

Hifdh of Quran

Hifdh of Quran is the process of memorizing and preserving the entire Quran. Kids should start Hifdh of Quran at a young age for several reasons. Firstly, their young minds are more receptive to memorization, making it easier for them to commit the entire text of the Quran to memory. Secondly, starting Hifdh at a young age instills a deep love and respect for the Quran in children, fostering a strong connection with their faith. Thirdly, Hifdh of Quran provides a valuable life skill that children can continue to benefit from throughout their lives.

There are three different types of Hifdh programs available to students.

  • Full-time Hifdh is typically preferred for students aged ten and above, although children as young as eight may also attend. The program lasts three years or more, and is best suited for students who demonstrate a strong commitment to Quranic study, are fluent in reading the Quran with Tajweed, and aspire to become Hafidh of Quran. Students may enroll in a full-time Hifdh school or complete the program at home with an online or in-person teacher. Full-time students are assigned homework and are expected to come to class prepared with their memorization work.

  • Part-time Hifdh involves two hours of Quran memorization per day with a teacher in addition to regular schooling. Students are encouraged to memorize half to one page a day, and work at their own pace. As teachers usually have limited time to concentrate on new memorization, students are responsible for reviewing their previous work.

  • For those who prefer to go at their own pace, students may memorize with a teacher on a daily or weekly basis and work consistently towards memorizing the entire Quran.

Academics

Full time hifdh students do a variety of options for academics based upon their age, time, and interest. Some of the common methods used are:

  • Students typically spend only a few hours per week on Math and Language & Arts, as the focus of their studies is on Hifdh. However, students are able to catch up academically after completing their Hifdh studies and can start in the grade level appropriate for their age. Homeschool cooperatives offer students the opportunity to attend a wider range of elective subjects.

  • Full-time online schooling in conjunction with Hifdh is also a common practice, but it can be more time-consuming and stressful for students, potentially delaying their progress in Hifdh studies.

Online School

Online school for elementary students is a virtual learning environment where children can attend classes, interact with teachers and peers, and complete coursework remotely using the internet. Online schools offer a flexible and convenient alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar schools, allowing children to learn at their own pace and on their own schedule. Online elementary schools typically provide a comprehensive curriculum that covers core subjects such as math, language arts, science, and social studies, as well as electives and extracurricular activities. Teachers are available to provide instruction and support through virtual classrooms, video conferencing, email, and other digital communication channels. Online schools for elementary students can provide a safe and supportive learning environment that allows children to explore new subjects and develop essential skills in a personalized and engaging way. However, it is important for parents to carefully consider the pros and cons of online schooling and ensure that the school they choose is accredited and provides a quality education that meets their child's unique needs and learning style.
